Key looks for summer 2012

When it comes to swimwear, fashion trends move slower than the tides. Still, you probably don’t want to spend time hiding among the waves because it looks like you’re still sporting your trunks from grade three swimming lessons. Here are a few key looks for the summer season that aren’t so hazardous when wet.

Steer clear of the infamous teeny-weeny yellow polka dot bikini; there are two dominating prints this summer. The first is tropical. Thanks to Prada’s influence, fashion is literally going bananas (and palm trees, and toucans) for all things a little bit Carmen Miranda. The second print to splash around in is tribal. Everything from Ikat print to digital versions works here in black and white combinations or hot earth tones.

In terms of eras to take cues from beachgoers will be living in the 70’s or alternatively look a little further back to the 1950’s. The 70’s look echoes mainline runways; crochet is the main feature along with playsuit styles. For the latter vintage-era look Esther Williams – star of so many old MGM movies – is your muse. Look for swimsuits with halter necks, boy legs and sweetheart necklines. If a bikini is your thing, hunt for high-waisted versions.

For the boys it’s all about avoiding extremes this season. No budgie smugglers or oversized board-shorts please. Shape-wise you want trunks that mimic track shorts; they’re shorter and reflect the 70’s trend. Colour and prints for men also have a vintage vibe; channel all those kitsch Elvis beach movies in faded Hawaiian motifs.
