Celebrate Chinese New Year with free cultural activities at Prahran Market

Celebrate 2012’s Chinese New Year and welcome in the Year of the Dragon with Prahran Market on Tuesday the 24th of January 2012.

To celebrate this significant cultural event, the Market is offering a range of free cultural activities for all including:

 

  • Free Chinese face painting for the children between 9.30am and 12.30pm, Market Square.
  • Traditional Chinese Cooking Demonstration between 11am and 2pm, Blanco Demonstration Kitchen.
  • A traditional Chinese Lion Dance between 12pm and 1pm throughout the Market
  • Traditional Chinese Music presented by the Chao Feng Orchestra, between 1pm and 2pm, Market Square
  • Free Fortune Cookie Giveaway*, between 1pm and 2pm, Market Square

Market traders are also promoting a myriad of great value savings for Tuesday the 24thonly.

“Multiculturalism has played an important role in influencing the type of produce and hard to find delicacies that the Market has to offer”, said Prahran Market GM, Christopher Young.

“By celebrating Chinese New Year, we are able to applaud the wonderful array of Asian flavours that make Melbourne’s culinary offering, what it is today.”

“We invite all local community members to visit the Market and enjoy this event together,” he said.

Chinese New Year is the longest and most important celebration in the Chinese calendar.   The new year begins on the first day of the Chinese calendar, and the festivities continue for 15 days.

 

Opening hours: Tues, Thurs, Sat 7am-5pm, Fri 7am-6pm, Sun 10am-3pm
