The Windsor Workshop, nestled within raw brick walls, busily hums along. Creatives – jewellers, photographers, designers, writers and artists – are hard at work in the cosy space which is punctuated by a sun-lit buzz, inviting lounge, communal bench and bright smiles from illustrator Sarah Hankinson.

“It’s a collaborative space; everyone is supportive of one another,” Sarah confirms. The Windsor Workshop, located in the renovated Paterson’s Cakes building, is where Sarah and her sister, designer Bree, have established an inspiring, open-plan studio.

As an esteemed illustrator, (her work appears in publications like Harper’s Bazaar and Inside Out magazines regularly), Sarah understands the need for a workspace like this.“I’ve worked in a few shared studios before. So, we wanted to create a perfect space. It’s nice to be in the same situation as other people; inspiring to see what other people are doing.”

Sarah and Bree’s studio plan is homely and relaxed, and desks can be hired out by prospective creatives and freelancers. The Windsor Workshop also holds occasional open studio events for amateur would-be creatives too; perhaps learn how to make your own piñata or a string ball planter.

Hamish Carr raises the concern of social interactions and their relationship with the contemporary environment, visually representing the way we receive and consume information.

In his upcoming solo exhibition at Anna Pappas Gallery, Transmission, Carr explores the visualisation of information in transit. Central to the work is a distinct drawing process combined with specific sculptural practice.

Carr’s two-dimensional works employ mapping techniques, digitisation and intuitive mark making. This enables the work to capture moments of communication – visually inferring particles and pixels caught in motion. The three-dimensional pieces operate on a different level, inferring communicative monuments offering points of intersection where the dialogue depicted can arrive or disembark. The combination of drawing process and object-based work continues Carr’s investigation into the technocratic and fluid notions of contemporary culture.

Hamish Carr was born in Rochester, New York, and currently lives and works in Melbourne. He completed a Master of Fine Arts at the Victorian College of the Arts (2009). Carr has received a number of highly respected awards and residencies including the Australia Councils ArtStart Grant (2012); Arts Victoria Cultural Exchange Grant (2011); and the Youkobo Artspace Residency, Tokyo, Japan (2011).

Locals may have noticed a curious addition to the Prahran Hotel over recent months; an extraordinary wall of over-sized concrete pipes stacked to the skyline.

After two years in the making, the Sand Hill Road hospitality group launches the reinvigorated iconic 1940s pub, located on High Street, Prahran, delivering its fifth installment to its stable of successful Melbourne pubs, including Bridge Hotel, Richmond Club Hotel, Holliava and Post Office Bar Pizza.

The Prahran Hotel make-over brings the vision held for the pub by Sand Hill Road owners, Matt Mullins and brother Andy, Tom Birch and Doug Maskiell, to reality following its initial facelift by the team in 2010.

“Andy and I used to live over the road in Charles Street. The Prahran Hotel was our local. We’d sit in the public bar and dream of one day owning the pub.” says Matt Mullins.

The new extension to the existing pub includes a courtyard shaded by a Chinese elm tree with a five metre-long bar and collapsible tables that give way to a dance floor for weekends.

The striking façade is the true hero of the revitalised pub featuring 17 concrete pipes, stacked like beer kegs, that invite the eye from the street-front through to the interiors with a selection being reserved for booth seating for two, six or 12 people, finished with leather banquette seating and timber paneling.

The Prahran Hotel kitchen stands proudly on its recent history of serving classic, fresh, accessible pub fare. It’s what has made the place famous – and there’ll be no departure now from its chicken parmas, steaks, salads and seafoods.

The Prahran Hotel is all about locals – offering $13 porterhouse steak & chicken parma specials on Tuesday and Wednesday nights. And as with Sand Hill Road’s four other iconic venues, Friday night from 5pm is dedicated to Karma Kegs where a keg of Carlton Draught is tapped and customers are encouraged to pay whatever they feel is “karmically fair” with all funds raised being donated to a nominated charity.

The Prahran Hotel

82 High Street, Prahran

Open from midday til late 7 days a week.

For further information or bookings for dining or private functions, contact (03) 9529 2168 or visit www.prahranhotel.com

Late Monday evening, Agatha Licciardi was in the kitchen creating a 24 hour slow cooked sauce. She could have left the job to her chefs, but she was Sicilian and old family recipes must be done just so.

“I’m not a perfectionist, I’m a bit of a control freak”, she laughs. It’s this love for food and 16 years experience that drove her and long time friends carpenter Rob Rocca and developer Filippo Egilda to start the Stickybeak cafe, a product of meticulous planning and a combination of all their strengths. “We all had the same vision,” says Agatha.

Agatha keeps the house running smoothly, Filippo puts his experience running bars to good use, and Rob built the interior with the help of the others and artist Anthony Balletta.

“We were originally going to do a kind of shabby chic, and it just evolved into industrial steampunk”, she says. The cafe has packs of pencils ready to give kids and Da Vinci themed murals on the walls.

Perhaps they are subtly encouraging the next generation of Aerosol Alley (neighbouring the cafe) street artists while satiating Windsor’s appetite for homemade hash browns, eggplant chips and Arancini mignon?

“We’re designers of coffee.” It’s unsurprising director Fred Gomo describes his and Danny Ehrlich’s business as such. Over 52 years, Cisco’s World of Coffee has steeped its coffee and tea wholesale trade into its retail presence.

Cisco’s brews are sourced from over 30 countries. Their end-products are percolated from a blend of Cisco’s knowledge and experience, as well as clients’ changing demands derived from their subjective perceptions of flavour.

Cisco’s is brimming with specialised coffee blends, tea in wooden chests, cups, plungers, pots, and Keep Cups for eco-conscious aficionados.

The smell of freshly roasted beans engulfs anyone who enters; a sign that Cisco’s blends are as unique as the person drinking the coffee; “Some clients wanted something more edgy, so we developed a Prahran blend.” Fred refuses to pinpoint his own favourite though, insisting that day and mood determines his choice in coffee.

In demand among locals, all coffee is freshly roasted on site every day in Cisco’s 40-year old roaster; a relic that’s soon to be replaced. Get your cup before it’s gone.

Change of season brings a stunning installation.

The newly renovated and relaunched Como Melbourne which is now part of the MGallery Collection has unveiled a stunning Como Harvest Installation which ties in with the Winter Masterpieces exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria of which Accor is a sponsor.

As part of the Como Harvest, the mezzanine level of The Como Melbourne has been transformed into a veritable garden with decor highlights from local retailers Exhibit Interiors, The Industrial Revolution and Trove.

Furniture has also been sourced from Melbourne based Thonet. All Exhibit Interiors and Trove items on display can be purchased from the correlating stores which are located in the Chapel Street Precinct.

Created by renowned local stylist, Natalie James who is known for her penchant for colour, the Como Harvest is influenced by autumn’s traditional warm and earthy tones.

“I wanted the Como Harvest installation to be natural, rustic and organic while also playing off The Como.s clean, sleek and vibrant interiors. The Como Melbourne has always pushed the boundaries when it comes to having a bit of fun while remaining very chic, and I think the Como Harvest is a great representation of this. It.s great to see the concept come to life,” said Natalie.

General Manager for The Como Melbourne, Cleo Seaman, said “we wanted to create a talking and picture point for our guests, and with the change in season along with the incredible Winter Masterpieces exhibition which is on at the NGV, the Como Harvest idea tied in nicely.”

Guests of the hotel are invited to take photos of the installation and post photos to Twitter and Instagram with a #ComoHarvest hashtag.

Complementing the Como Harvest installation, The Como Melbourne is offering a Cultural Package which includes overnight accommodation, breakfast for two people, 2 Harvest cocktails in SOBar plus tickets to the Winter Masterpieces exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria from $253 per night.

The Cultural Package at The Como Melbourne is available for stays until 7 September 2013.
