The music scene on Chapel Street is world class & seeing music performed live will always be the best way to take it in.

New and old. Whether you’re standing shoulder to shoulder, comfortably seated, or leaning up against the bar- there’s nothing like experiencing live music. To get you in the mood for a live gig or two, here’s a taste of the local favourites & places to let get a little wild.

Local Flavour

You may have visited a million times before (most likely for a bevvy & cheap pizza) but time it right & you can treat your ears to some sweet tunes as well…

Lucky Coq is a local favourite for low-key vibes and a relaxed atmosphere. With their ‘always fun, always free’ motto, they’re entertaining locals pretty much every night of the week. A slew of hot DJs play electronic, throwback tunes, house, party, and even vinyl only old-school hip hop & RNB.

The Temperance Hotel is ‘Chapel Street’s Favourite Local’, even if they do say so themselves. Amongst a huge mix of entertainment options during the week, Sundays are when the live music springs to life.

The young, funky acoustic duo ‘Brentwood’ take control of the Sunday arvo session when you can see why they did so well on their recent X Factor Australia journey – as they say themselves ‘these gingers are worth keeping an eye on.’
Extend your Sunday afternoon into evening with the brilliant ‘South Side Soul’, and you’re onto a winner!

Party Time

Kick your weekend off with bangers and wind down with acoustic goodness. Hit the local spots that throw the best parties & live music.

The College Lawn are well known for throwing a great party. Nowadays not many would argue when they say their Sunday session is an institution.

If the guys with the guitars seem familiar to you, it’s because they’re Curry brothers Andrew and Bernard. You’ve seen them and their brother Stephen all over your TV screen over the years. Their cover band ‘Johnny Wonderpants’ is one of the best known ‘full band’ cover bands in Melbourne, and they’ve held the Sunday session down at the College Lawn for 15 years!

They’re doing things a tad differently by bringing the party tunes ‘acoustic style’ early  Saturday evenings, the Imperial uses live music to pump up the weekend’s biggest party night. DJs using sax and other live elements fill the dancefloor as the nights moves along, and everyone loves every single second.

Carpe Diem Bar has a ‘private party’ feel. It’s cool, small but roomy and fills up nicely with people and music!
With regular acoustic sessions, notably on Fridays, Carpe Diem (which, if you’ve seen Dead Poets Society, you know means ‘seize the day’ in Latin) is basically three little bars in one great venue.
