So you’ve got your outfit on point, the squad has been assembled and you’re 110% ready for a day of horsey antics at the races. There’s only one thing left to prep & that’s your place to prime! A boozy breakfast is obligatory for all race day adventures, after all – how else will you show off your race day getup’ to the non race day goers?!

There are three keys to a good pre-race breakfast – so start taking notes.

  1. It’s big enough for the whole squad
  2. It’s close to a train station
  3. There’s booze. Duh.

But no need to search, and search for your ideal boozy breakfast spot, we have five of the best right here! Just point and choose, friend. And maybe shoot us an invite – we love a prep and prime brekky just as much as everyone else 😉

If you haven’t heard of South Yarra’s latest lady, you’re seriously missing out on the fun. House of Lulu White is a babe of a cafe. All hot pink & saucy. But she’s more than just good looks. The food picture perfect and tastes good too – plus their breakfast cocktail selection is sure to get the girls (and guys) excited!

Our pick? Get the Almond and fig loaf, whipped yuzu ricotta, umi plum syrup and matcha with the bottomless brunch! That’s $30 for 1.5 hours of bottomless cocktails. Winner, winner!

We should all know Abacus by now, it’s been the brunch ‘it’ spot since it opened in December 2016. Now if you want to know if it lives up to the hype, you’ll be glad to know it’s ‘all that’ and more. The space is spectacular, plus the seats are set up so that you can people watch on Chapel Street while enjoying your locally sourced, seasonal, artisanal breakfast. For a big group, we’d suggest that you book – Abacus is sure to fill up pretty quickly, and heels aren’t made for waiting in line.

Our pick? Get the sweet ricotta dumplings with maple & ricotta stuffed dumplings, confit rhubarb, salted peanut, passionfruit & pear with the nitro coffee, raw cacao and agave cocktail. A sweet way to start a sweet day.

Boozy Breakfast
New to Chapel Street in June

Wilson & Market is a bit fancy shmancy and goes from breakfast to dinner to after party – but we’ll talk more about that another time. Right now, we’re only interested in breakfast… and the pre-party. We’re talking anything from a full english to french pastries and an entire line up of cocktails on offer.

But our pick? Get the smash pea & avocado toast with fava, broad bean leaf & asparagus and the signature gin & tonic! That way, at least you’re eating your greens and you’ll feel a little better about the rest of your choices during the day.

First Date on Chapel Street

Let’s be fair, Oscar Cooper was probably already on your list. It’s a long time favourite for race goers. We couldn’t leave it off the list because it’s literally THE perfect pre-race breakfast spot! The food choices are delicious, there’s espresso martinis available all morning long and it’s literally only a few skips to Prahran Station.

Our pick? Start off with an espresso martini (or two) before ordering the breakfast burrito with bacon, egg, cheese, avocado, tomato & jalapeño salsa and a little hot sauce. You’ll be primed and ready to go all day long with that epic combo!

Journeyman

One for the Windsor-ites, the local favourite Journeyman. Why, we hear you ask. 1. It’ll make for super cute photos. 2. The food is both yummy AND good for you. 3. They’ll serve you bubbles at 8am. Need we continue? Didn’t think so.

Our pick? The Persian Fetta Potato Croquette with poached eggs, sweet corn puree, crispy kale, and manchego cheese with a mimosa!
